How to Clean and Care for Your Engagement Ring

Exclusive access to expert wedding planning advice and resources from top industry professionals.
You love basking in the glow of your engagement ring, right? You're not going to like this, but unfortunately, even the sparkliest of rings won't stay shiny forever without some serious tender love and care. Since wearing that much-loved piece of jewelry on your hand every day makes it susceptible to scratches and scuffs, it's important to follow these cleaning and care tips from the diamond experts over at Zales.
Here are six ways to keep that gorgeous engagement ring of yours in tip top shape.
1. Keep it away from dirt and grime.
Yes, just like the doctor says, prevention is key. While all rings are subject to getting a little roughed during your day to day routine, you should avoid wearing yours when you know things are bound to get messy. Take it off while you garden, clean the house, go on an outdoorsy trip, or do anything else that'll get you dirty. Make sure to remove it when you're putting on lotion, perfume, or other cosmetics, too, because they may contain harmful chemicals.
2. Don't make your ring your workout buddy.
From hitting the gym to playing in the office basketball league, exercise and contact sports don't mix with engagement rings. Not only can your precious jewelry be seriously damaged during a workout or game (and possibly injure you or someone else in the process), but sweat makes it that much easier for it to slip right off. Also, never take your ring in the pool or spa, where it can go MIA or suffer color changes and structural problems from the chlorine.
3. Clean it at home, but use caution.
Wait! Before you break out the toothpaste, baking soda, or bleach, know that the safest bets for cleaning jewelry yourself are warm water and solutions made specifically for your ring's material. You can also use jewelry polishing cloths to maintain shine, but steer clear of tissues and paper towels that can cause scratches. And always clean your jewelry someplace safe, not over a drain or near risky cracks and crevices.
4. Have your ring professionally cleaned, too.
If you're not sure what you're doing (or if the ring really needs a good scrubbing), you can have your jewelry professionally cleaned. Jewelers, like Zales, offer complimentary cleanings for all rings (not just those purchased at Zales)! Or splurge and give your white gold sparkler a real treat with a spa day every anniversary to keep it looking its best.
5. Get it insured.
You can deal with dirty. But lost, stolen, or completely ruined? Not something you want to handle. See if you can add your engagement ring to your home insurance, or purchase ring insurance that will protect you from the unimaginable.
6. Inspect the ring frequently.
And don't just look for obvious scuffs or discoloring. Check closely to see if the prongs are still tightly holding the rock in place. Snags on clothing or big bumps can loosen those prongs, increasing the risk that your diamond (or other gem) will fall out. Zales, and other select jewelers, will inspect your ring free of charge, so head in for regular check-ups.
7. Store it safely.
Whether you're removing your ring for a couple of minutes or you expect to be without it for months, always keep it safe and secure. Use a ring holder while doing dishes, showering, or sleeping. Opt for a fabric-lined box if you plan to have it off for an extended period of time. And always put your ring in a fabric or leather case when traveling. Looking for your perfect sparkler?
