5 Tips for Outdoor Fall & Winter Weddings

Exclusive access to expert wedding planning advice and resources from top industry professionals.
There is something so beautiful and completely enchanting about an outdoor wedding, whether you host it al fresco in the garden, or add a tent for extra ambiance (and let's be honest, for extra warmth). The warmth factor becomes particularly important for fall and winter weddings. One of your top priorities should be keeping guests completely comfortable as the temperature dips when the sun sets (and it sets early!). If you want your guests to stay at your wedding until you make your memorable exit, remember our top five tips for outdoor fall and winter fetes.

1. Time your ceremony.

During the fall and winter, the sun sets early and fast. Ultimately, you do not want to be walking down the aisle and reciting your vows in the dark. Your beloved, your guests, and your photographer are also planning on golden light too. Make sure you plan your ceremony accordingly and allow a bit more time than you think you might initially need.

2. Keep your tent warm.

One of the absolute worst feelings is being cold, so make sure to add the appropriate number of heaters to your tent. Talk to your venue, event planner, or rental company and ask for their suggestions. Also, most tents have an option to add sides. They're often plastic and may not look completely lovely during the day, but they will hold the warmth inside your tent at night.

3. Great music = dancing = staying warm.

The best bands and DJs make you want to get out on the dance floor and stay there. This becomes particularly important during the fall and winter. If guests are moving on the dance floor, they definitely won't be cold. Plus, everyone will be having a blast. Win-win!

4. Think boleros & blankets.

Whether you're planning to wear a dress complete with straps or one that is strapless, think about packing a bolero. Although we hope you spend some serious time on the dance floor, you're going to spend a lot of time chatting with guests and you definitely don't want to feel cold while catching up! Also, add blankets to your lounge area. Nothing looks cozier or more inviting than a sofa with a blanket.

5. Serve something warm.

Whether you opt for soup as an appetizer or plan to serve hot drinks as a late night snack, think about serving something hot to warm guests up. We're all completely obsessed with s'mores, #PSLs, hot apple cider, and hot chocolate!
