If you're getting tired of receiving local jam as a wedding favor, good news: the next wedding you attend might send you home with a rolled joint instead.
Photo by ststoev via BigStock According to a new articlein The New York Times, the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington has some couples opting for a weed-centric wedding. From the Times:
"The Meisels and Melshenker nuptials looked as if their inspiration had come not from the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings but from High Times. All of the floral arrangements, including the bride’s bouquet, contained a variety of white flowers mixed with marijuana buds and leaves. Mr. Melshenker and his groomsmen wore boutonnieres crafted out of twine and marijuana buds, and Mr. Melshenker’s three dogs, who were also in attendance, wore collars made of cannabis buds, eucalyptus leaves and pink ribbons."
And the cannabis wedding ideas don't stop with the florals. Couples are also opting for marijuana plant escort cards, joint bars and hookah lounges, buds on the salad, and pot brownies on the dessert table. Proponents of weed at weddings say it fosters community in a way that good old-fashioned alcohol doesn't.
"Everybody was blazing the whole time,” said Mr. Dyke, who believes cannabis is a much more romantic substance than alcohol because it represents exploration, rebellion, openness and togetherness. “Marijuana intoxication is full of positive emotion. People feel love and connection. Every single person cried at the wedding."
On the one hand, having a weed-themed wedding doesn't seemthatdifferent from a couple who loves wine incorporating vino into every aspect of their big day. And we don't bat an eye at the open bar, even though we know all your guests might not drink. On the other hand, marijuana may be legal in Colorado, but it still makes a lot of people uncomfortable. And sharing a joint might foster togetherness among people who partake, but what about the guests who flew in from out of state and may have to pass a job-required drug test in the near future? If you're going to opt for weed at your wedding, we suggest knowing your crowd...and may be arranging to have late-night snacks at your reception.
