11 Popular Love Songs That Actually Have Terribly Unromantic Lyrics

Collect, manage, and organize your wedding guest information for each event and track their preferences.
You've swayed and grooved to these tunes at proms, dances, and weddings -- but did you know that many of our culture's most cherished love songs have decidedly unromantic lyrics? Terribly Unromantic Lyrics From the creepy undertones of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, to the "Oops, we made a drunken mistake!" message of Bruno Mars' "Marry You," you may want to think twice before putting one of these jams on your big-day playlist.

1. "As Long As You Love Me" by the Backstreet Boys

"I don't care who you are, or where you're from, or what you did" is uplifting until you think about all the horrible things someone could have done. It's OK that they killed your cat as long as they love you? We don't think so.

2. "Every Breath You Take" by The Police

"Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take -- I'll be watching you." Stop watching me, Sting!

3. "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge

"Meet me in the altar in your white dress. We ain't getting no younger, we might as well do it." Ah, the romance of marrying because you're aging past your prime.

4. "Marry You" by Bruno Mars

Though "Marry You" provided the soundtrack for one of the most romantic -- and well-choreographed -- proposals of all time (see above), its lyrics aren't quite so sweet. With the double whammy of, "It's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do. Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you" and "Don't say no, no, no, no-no; just say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah," this song borders on creepy.

5. "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston

It's a popular choice at weddings, but "I Will Always Love You" is actually straight-up depressing: "Bittersweet memories -- that is all I'm taking with me. So good-bye. Please don't cry: We both know I'm not what you, you need." It's a breakup song -- skip it!

6. "Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure

"I don't care if Monday's blue. Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too. Thursday I don't care about you. It's Friday I'm in love." Loving your partner just one day of the week: Not exactly what we'd call romance.

7. "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie

https://youtu.be/aoR0mGq_z2I   "Love of mine, someday you will die. But I'll be close behind. I'll follow you into the dark." We admit that there's something a little romantic about this tune -- in a last-scene-in-"The-Notebook" way -- but for a wedding? Allow us to suggest you choose something a little more uplifting.

8. "Sometimes" by Britney Spears

"Sometimes I run, sometimes I hide. Sometimes I'm scared of you." We get that you're nervous, 1990s-era Brit...but these are not feelings you want to be having when you're falling in love.

9. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Ray Charles

"I simply must go -- Betty, it's cold outside. The answer is no -- I say, it's cold out there." It's called consent, people. C-O-N-S-E-N-T.

10. "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum

"It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now." Sweeter words have never been spoken!

11. "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls

"And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming, or the moment of truth in your lies. When everything feels like the movies, yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive." You may have danced to this song with your 7th grade crush, but please -- skip it on your wedding day and save it for just-the-two-of-you dances in your kitchen.
