Cindy Meneghin and Maureen Kilian met in their junior year of high school when Kilian was new at the school. "There was this new girl sitting on the bleachers all by herself at the other end of the gym," Meneghin explains in the video below. "I asked my friends if anybody knew who she was, and they said 'Oh, that's the new girl from New York.'" The two became friends that day and remained close for a year, until they realized there was something more between them. "When I started to realize what a sensitive person she was -- very giving, selfless person -- those were the qualities that made me fall in love with her," Kilian says. That first meeting was more than 40 years ago, and for the last decade, Kilian and Meneghin have been fighting for the right to marry in their hometown of Butler, New Jersey. "Civil unions are not equality; marriage is equality," says Meneghin. "When you love someone, you don't stop fighting for them." Finally, in 2013, the longtime couple got their wish -- they were legally married in their home state. See more of their emotional love story and the battle for marriage equality in the video.
